DESIGN AND DISPLAY

The Galaxy S21 Ultra’s 6.8-inch Dynamic AMOLED display is clearly one of the best on a tablet. It’s vivid, colorful, and unlike its predecessor, it doesn’t force you to choose between the highest resolution and the highest refresh rate.

The Ultra, on the other hand, outperforms the iPhone in terms of dynamic refresh rate. You now get 120Hz and quad HD resolution at the same time, in addition to super smooth scrolling and gameplay. As a result, you don’t have to pick between high resolution and high refresh rates.

The S21 Ultra is also intelligent enough to automatically reduce the refresh rate to 10Hz to save power.

More good news: the S21 Ultra’s display can achieve a peak rated brightness of 1,500 nits, making it easy to read outside. The S21 Ultra averaged 821 nits in our tests, which is higher than the iPhone 12 Pro Max’s 654 nits.

In our lab tests, the S21 Ultra’s screen generated 81.4 percent of the demanding DCI-P3 color gamut, compared to 84.8 percent for the iPhone 12 Pro Max.

The iPhone’s colors were slightly more accurate, with a Delta-E score of 0.07 versus 0.35 for the Galaxy S21 Ultra’s display.

CAMERA

The Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra has been rumored to be the best smartphone for telephoto shots. And the recently revealed spec sheet backs up the assertion. On paper, at least. There are four sensors in the rear camera system. A 108MP ISOCELL HM3 sensor, a 12MP ultra-wide lens, a 10MP periscope telephoto lens with 10x optical zoom, and another 10MP telephoto lens with 3x optical zoom make up the camera.

The periscope lens only refracts light twice to reach a 10x zoom, which is why it has been dubbed the best smartphone for telephoto shots. Other smartphone lenses, on the other hand, need at least 5. Refraction is reduced, resulting in a higher-quality image.

PERFORMANCE

The Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra is one of the first phones to feature Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 888 processor, which is paired with either 12GB or 16GB of RAM.

And this is a lightning-fast Android device. As I cut through lots of enemies in Grimvalor while providing console-quality graphics, the S21 Ultra didn’t flinch.

With excellent benchmark ratings, this flagship backs up my experience. The S21 Ultra scored 3,440 on Geekbench 5’s multi-core test and 1,123 on the single-core test. The iPhone 12 Pro Max scored 4,100 and 1,600 points higher, but it’s still the best results we’ve seen from an Android phone.

The S21 Ultra also performed admirably in the 3DMark Wild Life graphics test, achieving a frame rate of 34 frames per second. The average frame rate for the iPhone 12 Pro Max was 54 frames per second.

The Galaxy S21 Ultra took 1 minute and 2 seconds to transcode a 4K video to 1080p in our video editing test using the Adobe Premiere Rush software. That’s a lot quicker than the previous time.

BATTERY

This is the phone for you if you need anything to last all day. The S21 Ultra’s 5,000 mAh battery lasted 11 hours and 25 minutes in our web browsing battery test over 5G. That beats the iPhone 12 Pro Max’s time of 10:53, putting the Ultra at the top of our list of best phone battery life.

Note that this time was measured with the standard 60Hz display mode enabled, and that with adaptive mode (up to 120Hz) enabled, battery life will be reduced. We saw a runtime of 10 hours and 7 minutes in this mode.

CONNECTIVITY

Starting with 5G, the Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra supports all of the new wireless standards. The Qualcomm X60 modem in this platform supports carrier aggregation, which should result in faster peak speeds and lower power consumption.

T-performance Mobile’s in my area was very good. I’ve seen download speeds of more than 160 Mbps. It’s not great, but when I used the same SIM card in the iPhone 12 Pro Max, I only got 100 Mbps in the same place.
