ZTE nubia Red Magic 6

The ZTE Nubia Red Magic 5G, released last year, was the first smartphone to boast a 144Hz display. This year, Nubia has taken it a step further by launching the Red Magic 6 series, which includes the world’s first smartphones with a 165Hz refresh rate. SPECIFICATION

DESIGN

The Nubia Red Magic 6 is a hefty fellow, as are many gaming phones, measuring 169.9 x 77.2 x 9.7mm and weighing 220g, so it’ll be a strain to operate it one-handed.

The Red Magic 6 features a pattern on the back that is quite similar to that of its predecessor, with the Red Magic logo, a patterned decal, and a little camera bump that doesn’t protrude too far from the body.

The phone features a metal frame and a glass back. On the back, there are two LED strips, though they are relatively modest in comparison to other gaming phones.

The ports on the Red Magic 6 are strewn about the edges: a USB-C port on the bottom, a 3.5mm headphone jack on the top, a volume rocker and game mode slider on the left, and a power button and two haptic triggers on the right.

DISPLAY

The Nubia Red Magic 6 boasts a 6.8-inch display, so you’ll have plenty of room to watch your game. Because the front camera is located in the top bezel, there is no invasive lens positioning on the screen.

It’s an AMOLED display with a resolution of 2400 x 1080 pixels and a pixel density of roughly 387 pixels per inch. The images are strong and colorful, and the contrast is excellent, which is crucial since it allows you to quickly discern between different components of a game.

The display’s refresh rate can reach an all-time high of 165Hz, making the Red Magic 6 the only phone with that capability at the time of its debut.

That means the visual is refreshed 165 times per second, unlike 60Hz on a regular phone, 120Hz on a premium phone, and 144Hz on other gaming phones.

As a consequence, while browsing through menus or playing games that support faster refresh rates, motion seems silky-smooth. This fast refresh rate quickly depletes the battery, although you may reduce it if you choose.

CAMERA

While the Nubia Red Magic 6 isn’t a great camera phone, you’re not purchasing it to become a professional photographer. A 64MP f/1.8 primary camera, an 8MP f/2.0 ultra-wide camera, and a 2MP f/2.4 macro camera are the three back cameras.

The primary camera is a mixed bag, though its performance was typically satisfactory. The dynamic range is adequate, albeit there were some overexposure issues with some of the images. Snaps were 16MP by default, but you may increase the resolution to 64MP for high-resolution snaps.

PERFORMANCE

The Snapdragon 888 chipset powers the Red Magic 6 series. The chipset is manufactured using Samsung’s 5nm technology and has a single-clock frequency of up to 2.84GHz. The Adreno 660 GPU handles the visuals, and users may take use of Qualcomm’s third-generation Snapdragon Elite gaming capabilities. The phone has 8/12/18GB of LPDDR5 RAM and up to 512GB of internal storage through UFS 3.1.

Nubia’s ICE 6.0 technology is in charge of lowering the phone’s temperature. A 6-layer multi-dynamic cooling system is used. The built-in centrifugal fan has a maximum rotational speed of 18000 RPM. The blades are only 0.1 millimeters thick. Copper foil, thermal gel, graphene, and VC sheet are also used in the cooling system.

BATTERY

This is thanks to a 5,050mAh battery, which is very substantial for a smartphone, even if it is a gaming one (as those tend to have bigger battery packs).

Nubia claims that charging at 66W would take the battery from empty to full in 38 minutes, and we agree based on our tests.

You may have heard that the Red Magic 6 offers 120W charging, which appears to be superior to this, however this is only true in China; overseas versions of the Pro model also have a 66W charging limit.
